Changing the world starts with small steps, and for some, a big leap. The World Green Car of 2016 is the hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai. The technology is new -- there is no guarantee of how it will stand up to a decade of use -- and fueling stations for hydrogen are sparse.
Yet it seems that the intrepid pioneers willing to take the plunge knew exactly what they were getting into, and why.
"I love it, and I feel like I'm part of the solution," announced Mark Mobley, proud Mirai owner since April. He's more than happy to make the six-mile journey to the nearest hydrogen station every weekend, because his 18-mile daily commute is free of greenhouse emissions.
Even in California, the only state where it is sold, the Mirai is a rarity. "I usually have the pump to myself," said Mobley, "but one time two other Mirais were in line behind me. It was like seeing a gathering of California condors."
A fitting joke. Environmentally-conscious drivers like Mobley spur on, and help Toyota reach its goal to protect endangered species, like the condor.
